Inspired byThe movie 2040. It's a beautiful Australian-made infofilm (Is that a thing? It is now!) about one guy's vision for what the world will look like when his young daughter grows up. Inspiring, genuine, and uplifting. Not how I usually feel after watching movies about the future of our planet. It's also got me thinking more about how decentralisation (e.g. blockchain, energy, food production) of our resources might come into play in the future. Reading / listening / watching
TravelJust wrapped up my snow season, having spent time at Mount Hotham, Mount Buller, and Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand's North Island. "Wait! There's a snowy mountain in the North Island?", you say? Yes there is! A huge volcanic one in fact. Mt Ruapehu is about 4.5 hours drive south of Auckland. Being an active volcano and a generally exposed mountain meant that we experienced the biggest roller coaster ride of conditions: heavy wind and pounding sleet, easily followed by ice, sunshine and avalanches. We didn't see much riding, but we did get to spend quality fam time with my partner's family. All up I managed to spend about a week and a half on the snowboard...but as always could do with a little more. Bigger trips are over the horizon in 2020 and beyond, so I think I'll be sitting back and enjoying my home base for the remainder of the year. What I'm hyped aboutSpending quality time getting to know my younger cousin. I wasn't that involved in his life prior to this, which was a bit of a pity because I see so much likeness in us. Now's my chance to change this. I helped him line up his first job interview and I reckon I'm as excited about it as he is. That one bluebird day at Buller to finish off my season. I feel I've progressed my snowboarding this year, riding switch and gradually improving my confidence riding varied terrain, boxes and little jumps. It's a good feeling, particularly since I felt I'd hit a plateau last year. And I'm mind-blown by the girls and boys that do this kind of business. Finishing this website (!!) I bought this site way back in May, but never actually got around to populating the content until this week, where I've had time off between jobs. I dislike leaving projects unfinished and it's been nice to tick this long-awaited box. Starting a new job. I sat on it for a long while but finally decided to take an opportunity to move away from the university sector to a 'startup' in the private sector. Uni was comfy. Uni was cushy. But what I need right now is the opportunity to deep-dive, grow, and push myself in this profession that I feel I've got a lot to learn from. FocusOn gaining my Women Empowered pink belt (a self defence program) for Gracie Brazilian Jujitsu. Taking up this martial art has been amazing for me and one of my best choices this year. It's been one of the few things I know with certainty I am going to be involved in for a long while. So I'm just a handful of classes away for qualifying... More on this later. On writing. I've always been told I have a natural feel for writing but unfortunately I don't use this skill for much more than writing nice emails. Use it or lose it. I'd like to start writing articles to share on online platforms. That's also part of the premise of this website. On keeping up the momentum in exploring professional development avenues. UX, toastmasters, coding (Javascript)... Which one to do first? This /now page was inspired by Derek Sivers. I thought it was a great idea. You can make one for your site too.
